Since the day I lost it during my statistics exam a month ago, I keep on missing out a lot of things. I inadvertently turned into a snob. I can't tell if it's raining. I can't read the writing on the board and I always have migraines.
I need glasses however my friends are begging me to get contacts. I don't want contacts. I want eye glasses.
I can't count the number of times I was termed, "four eyes" or "nerd" or "geek". I was okay with that. I accepted it. Well, everything comes in dual package.
My eyeglasses helped me through job interviews, exams and first impressions. People thought I was smart since glasses tend to connote intelligence and often a certain degree of nerdiness to the unwary observer, and fortunately nowadays intelligence is more accepted, and valued. This is not actually true but it is so deeply ingrained in most people's minds, that they let themselves believe it.
In Princess Diaries, it is good to note that when Mia had her make-over, the glasses were the first to go. It was as if the glasses the the leading cause of the curse. The movie showed the main character losing her glasses to become a pretty pretty princess. I think what they're trying to convey is that girls with glasses are the undesirable ones.
I also found out recently that guys are intimidated by women with glasses. On the other hand, one guy also told me that some males think that females with eyeglasses are down-to-earth and unpretentious, which is contrary to my own observation.
I still hold on to my observation.
One thing that still puzzles me is that, when I lost my glasses and straightened my hair, people started noticing me. My pending friends requests in Facebook doubled, student politicians asked me to join their cause and parties, people tend to talk to me more often than ever. I can't tell if I enjoy the attention, but it surely never like this before.
With or without glasses, I am still the person I was before.
Only better.
